Project Rattlesnake: Gear Boxing

Today was the day that Tart officialy went into tear down mode for race car build!

The mission was to remove the gearbox in the car which found it’s way into Tart after it had been fitted to a car which was used to lay down quarter mile times. As a result of this, 2nd and 3rd gear hated every crunching minute of their miserable life in Tart.

A 9am start was declared to try beat the heat on a 33 degree day in Melbourne. But of course, no work starts until after coffee is consumed.

Wheels, drive shafts and a spider cocoons have to be removed first.

As some wise men once taught me, anything can be achieved with enough leverage and big enough hammers.

With Tart having more than 300,000km on the odo, it’s time I got on to changing out wear and tear items.

Photo note to self: Order new bushes, tie rod ends and ball joints.

Starter motor also has to come out. Getting dirt in your eyeballs is optional.

Stinky.

At about 10:30am the sun started to heat up.

Thankfully by 12:30 the gearbox was out. In even better news, I still have all my limbs!

Thanks to Dan who loves to hate this car yet still agreed to take me on as his apprentice.

The gearbox will be replaced to a spare low km one and the LSD will also be transferred over. The clutch that is currently in Tart is some awfully aggressive button clutch item which will be removed and fitted with one which is more friendly to my leg and spine.

Bong is also over to ensure that I am kept well hydrated.

Actually he’s here fitting his new J’s racing 60RS exhaust for more noise. Honda people love that stuff!

Instead of “yelling” at him, I’m actually helping AND taking photos for his blog at the same time. Remember this moment young man.

You look exhausted Bong! 😛

From memory, 12kgs is the difference between the OEM item and the pretty titanium J’s Racing one.

Now that we’re done, it’s time to go grab the fun car and chill out.

After falling asleep at the park like a hobo, it’s over to Nunawading for dinner at Papa Rich.

Best roti ever.

We’ve done well today with no injuries sustained, so that earns a bonus round of dessert too!
